Common Questions

Pool Fencing FAQs

Yes. Under the Fencing of Swimming Pools Act 1987 and the Building Act, all residential pools capable of holding more than 400mm of water must be fenced with a compliant barrier. The fence must meet NZS 8500 - the current New Zealand standard for pool barriers. Failure to comply can result in fines and enforcement action from Auckland Council.
Under NZS 8500, pool barriers must be a minimum of 1200mm high measured on the pool side. There must be no climbable elements within a certain distance, and gates must be self-closing and self-latching with the latch on the pool side. We ensure all our installations meet these requirements.
In some cases yes - boundary fencing can form part of a pool barrier if it meets NZS 8500 height and climbability requirements, and if any gates in the fence are compliant. We can assess your existing fencing during a site visit and advise on what upgrades, if any, are needed.
Most pool fence installations are completed in one day. Larger pools or those requiring concrete post footing may take two days. Glass panel installations take slightly longer as panels require careful handling and setting. We'll give you a clear timeline when we quote.
The pool itself may require building consent, but the pool barrier typically does not need a separate consent in Auckland - it is however subject to a council compliance inspection. We recommend contacting Auckland Council to confirm requirements for your specific situation. We can advise further during your site visit.
