Timber Fence Painting

Refresh and Protect Your Timber Fence

A fresh coat of paint or stain does more than improve your fence's appearance - it forms a critical protective barrier against moisture, UV damage and biological growth that can cause premature rot and deterioration. Regular painting or staining every few years is the single most effective way to extend the life of a timber fence.

Common Questions

Fence Painting FAQs

As a general guide, painted fences should be refreshed every 4-6 years, and stained fences every 2-4 years depending on the product used and sun exposure. North-facing fences in full sun will need attention more frequently. A fence that has gone grey and is starting to show surface cracking needs attention - the sooner it's treated the less prep work is required.
Paint sits on top of the timber surface and provides a solid colour finish. It's more durable when maintained but can peel if water gets underneath. Penetrating stain soaks into the timber, enhances the natural grain, and won't peel - but requires more frequent reapplication. Which is better depends on your existing fence and aesthetic preference. We'll advise during your quote.
Yes. If the existing paint is sound (no peeling or flaking), we clean the surface, sand back any rough areas and apply a fresh topcoat. If the existing paint is peeling badly, we'll need to strip it back first which is more labour-intensive. We'll assess the condition when we quote and give you an honest recommendation.
Timing depends on fence length, height and condition. A standard residential boundary fence of 20-30 metres typically takes one to two days including preparation and two coats. Longer runs or fences needing significant prep work will take longer. We'll give you a clear timeline when we quote.
Yes - and this is the most efficient approach. We can paint or stain your new fence as part of the same project, saving you the hassle of organising it separately. New timber accepts paint and stain well and a properly finished new fence will look its best and last longer than one left bare for months before being treated.
